Sal is a tree found in the Terai of Nepal which is of a low region and can be found to grow
in areas up to 1200 meters. In the Terai there can be found large areas of the deciduous tree
which has been known to grow up to 30 or 40 meters in height. Sal itself is one of the most important timbers from Nepal as it can be used for construction for its strength and durability. It has been used many times through the history of Nepal for temple carvings, decorative doors and windows. Now, because of its beautiful colour and properties, it has been used for traditional Nepalese furnishings and wood sculptures. "Carvings" Clans of Newars, the ‘old people’ of Kathmandu, have been working with wood for generations. They produce statues, decorative windows, doors and other works that is sold both locally and abroad, contributing one of Nepal’s most important industries. Restorations in traditional styles are ongoing and there has been a surge in traditional style buildings. |
