Nepal Architecture Nepalese Furniture Sculptures Paintings |
Bhaktapur for a long time has been called the City of Devotees, and has recently emerged as Nepal’s cultural capital. Because of the city’s medieval architecture, it's rich in traditional ancient music, handicrafts and ritual dance, as well as its present renaissance of vibrant Newari culture, Bhaktapur has been designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Bhaktapur is the ancient town in the Kathmandu valley that offers unique artistic culture, many historical palaces, splendid shrines and temples. This city is blessed with splendid wood carving work that housed many talented artists and craftsmen for centuries. The unique & high quality craftsmanship in temples, houses and exemplary work make the city a living museum. Wood carving workmanship has now been developed into its miniature form that encourage many talented artists and craftsmen to keep the tradition alive while allowing them to gain economic opportunity. Wood is an integral part of the Nepalese traditional culture and architecture and evidence of its role can be found dating back to the Lichhavi period, fourth through ninth century. While earlier wood carvings have been described in travelogues, samples have not survived the elements. More on Nepalese Wood Carvings :: Sal Wood |
