"Tibet"

Tibet's population is around 2,700,000 spred out over the countries 1,200,000 sq km/463,320 sq miles of rugged & beautiful countryside.

Often referred to as the 'Rooftop of the World' Tibet is locked away in its Himalayan fortress. The Tibetans are used to hardship, and despite the disastrous Chinese occupation, they have managed to keep their culture & humour alive.

However, Tibet's ancient civilization and ecosystem are seen to now be faced with extinction due to 54 years of mismanagement and abuse under its colonial ruler, the People's Republic of China. This ongoing destruction of Tibet is said to only be halted when the fate of Tibet is once again back in the hands of the Tibetans.

Tibet is the traditional center of Tibetan Buddhism, a distinctive form of Vajrayana, which is also related to the Shingon Buddhist tradition in Japan and Tibet is also home to the original spiritual tradition called Bön.

The Potala Palace, former residence of the Dalai Lamas before his exile, is now a World Heritage Site, as is Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama.
